Malo ni Parents and friends
We have moved into Autumn with chillier mornings but sunny days. We are halfway through the term!
We hope that Kakapo class are enjoying camp. Thanks to the parents who have gone to camp as parent helpers. Without your help a camp like this would not be possible. Thanks to Whaea Katy for her organisation of camp. Good luck to all the students. We know that you will be great ambassadors for our school and make the most of your opportunities while at camp.
Congratulations to everyone competing in the Weetbix Tryathlon on Sunday 19th March.
Congratulations to Katrina Alve and Michael Onganon and family on the recent safe arrival of their new son and brother, Idris Rei.
Thank you to everyone who has offered to help with transport and supervision at Capture the Flag and Blue Light Soccer next week.
Swimming: Swimming has finished at McKenzie Pool. Thanks to everyone who came and helped with swimming. The Senior Swimming Sports will be held on Friday 24th March at Stokes Valley Pool. The Junior Swimming Sports will be held later in the year due to the unavailability of McKenzie Pool.
Petone Library: We are concerned that Petone Library is being used as a after school care programme. If your children do wait for you at the library please remind them that they need to follow all instructions from the librarians and represent our school in an appropriate way.
Communication: Please ensure that you let Anna in the office know if your child is sick or going to be late or absent. If they are sick you need to be specific about what is wrong with them. There are still rules in place around Covid which we need to be aware of.
If your child is absent and we do not have a reason they will be marked as Truant. It is also a safety issue that we know where your children are if they are not at school.
Teachers send home a weekly Hero update for their class. Please take the time to read this as it provides important information around each class programme. If you cannot access Hero, please contact the office.
RISE Challenge: Please send a 20 page clearfile to school for your child's RISE Challenge if you have signed up for this year and not yet sent a folder
Netball: Year 5-8 Netball notices came home yesterday. Kakapo will receive theirs next week. Please return these by Wednesday 22nd March. Late entries will not be accepted. Please ensure that your child does want to play as it is very hard to move students around if you withdraw them from teams once they are registered.
Basketball: A notice will be coming home this week regarding Year 3-8 Basketball at Walter Nash Stadium in Term 2. Teams will only be entered if we have enough coaches/ managers.
Cyclone Gabrielle Relief Fund: This year for Lent we are going to hold a Non-Uniform Day on Friday 31st March for the Cyclone Gabrielle Relief Fund for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Gold coin donation for the Non-Uniform please.
- Touch and Netball fees are now overdue
- Book Club Issue 2 orders close on
This Sunday we listen to the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. Help us to seek a personal encounter with you so that we can receive your life-giving water.
Help us to reach out and share the good news with others so that they too can come to the water and experience everlasting life.
Help us to show mercy and love to our brothers and sisters especially those who are different from us. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Ke manuia koutou uma I te Aloha o te Atua

Celebrating our School - Te whakanui i tatou kura
Nau mai haere mai to Kitty and Isla and their family. Welcome to our school community! We welcomed Kitty and Isla with a whakatau last Monday at church. Kitty joins Kererū class and Isla joins Kea class. Little brother Matteo will join Tūī class in Term 3. (Photo below) We are very happy to have you with us!
There has been so much happening in and around the school in the last two weeks. Kakapo class is currently enjoying some time away at camp, but were lucky enough to have Steeve (Georgia's dad and a Football Manager) come in to school and take them through some soccer training sessions, which will come in very handy when they participate in the upcoming Bluelight Soccer competition. The new artificial turf is very versatile and served as a football pitch - check out the pictures below.
The Senior school visited Percy's Reserve last Friday as part of their Science learning to explore and observe. Thank you to our scientist Carol from House of Science who helped set up and run the rotation activites. Please read below for Novao's recount of the visit and some more photographs.
Check out the fairy house Mrs Tristram hung outside for RISE time - it was great to see so many children taking it in turns to relax and read in the fairy house. "Play is our favourite way of learning."
Whaea Katy has touched base with us today to let us know that our camp students are having fun! There was bush craft yesterday with bivvy shelter building and a camp fire with toasted marshmallows, followed by a night-line walk through the bush. It was reported our wonderful parent helpers added to the atmosphere with jump scares!
Today the students have enjoyed a river crossing, an experience on the high ropes and zip line, and tonight they will be staying at the lodge. We look forward to their safe return and will have more photographs and stories to share from camp in the next newsletter.
Thank you to all the students who are participating in Movin' March! If you walk, ride or scoot to school, you can have a "passport" and collect stamps to win prizes. Please see Anna in the office if you haven't already for your passport.

Percy's Reserve Senior Trip - A story by Novao
Last Friday the school went to Percy's Reserve. There were lots of ducks around and it was hard not to step on them. It was a bit wet and muddy, but it was fun. At times it got confusing but that didn't bother me. We missed a few lessons because of it, like the bugs one, but that's ok.
At the end of it my group got to go in the weta cave. At the back it was filled with weta's, it was loud with screams but I can't say too much as I was a bit scared too. The parent helpers were very helpful even when it got completed. I'm very thankful for their help.
I liked to play in the river. I was a bit sad when we had to go to the next activity. Percy's Reserve was fun! By Novao

FOSH News
The 2023 “FOSH” (Friends of Sacred Heart) committee would like to thank Kate Wasson and Madeline Louden for all their hard work and dedication over the last five-plus years with coordinating fun events that our whole school community has benefited from.
The work FOSH does, not only helps raise money for important school resources such as a new classroom white board for Kererū class, televisions for digital learning in Ruru and Kakapo classes and new cords and strings for the school band, to name just a few, but it also gives our families an opportunity to be part of our school whanau.
We would love to hear from you if you would like to be involved, in any capacity, when it suits you. We welcome your fundraising ideas, to helping at events, to being part of the committee (no more than two meetings per term!).

School Board Blurb
Kia ora Sacred Heart Community,
The Board had the first meeting for 2023 on the 22nd February. Kate Wright was re-elected (unopposed!) to the position of Presiding Member (formerly know as Chair). The Board look forward to continuing under Kate’s sage leadership this year.A typically robust Principal’s Report was discussed. Of note, over the holidays the back fence has been replaced, the school repainted and new artificial turf and landscaping completed at the front of the school.
The Board has sent a letter of gratitude to Tai and Sharon Vaka for their extraordinary generosity in completing the turf project over the holidays.Work is ongoing towards completing the School’s 3-year Strategic Plan, as well as Annual Plan and School Charter.
Thank you to those who contributed to the consultation process around the Strategic Plan via the survey and other discussion forums.
Our ERO journey also looks to be progressing well, with a positive and helpful relationship developing with our ERO representative Mary Ely. The 2023 Budget will soon be finalised and the Board note that the 2022 Budget was very well managed, with thanks to Liz and Helen Kneebone particularly for their astute guidance in troubled financial times.
The voluminous Risk Assessment and Management Strategies for Camp Makahika were tabled for the Board. The camp begins tomorrow at the time of writing and looks to be an amazing programme for our Kākāpō tamariki. Many thanks to all students, parents and teachers who have been involved in planning and fundraising for this great event.

Health News
Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can lead to serious complications. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your whānau and community from catching and spreading measles. Measles is in Aotearoa New Zealand from February 2023 so get vaccinated if you have not been.
Why is vaccination so important?
Vaccination is a very effective way of protecting against measles.
- Very few people who are fully vaccinated still get measles.
- The vaccine is called the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. No measles-only vaccine is available in New Zealand.
- Having only 1 dose of the MMR vaccine is not enough protection against measles – you need to have 2 to complete the course. A single dose of MMR gives you a 95% chance of being protected against measles, 2 doses increases this to 99%.
- The vaccine is part of the childhood immunisation schedule for children at 12 months and 15 months of age.
- The vaccine is free.
- Some people may not be able to have the vaccine. Read more here.
- If you're not sure you have been vaccinated against measles, it’s best to get immunised. It’s safe to have an extra dose of the MMR vaccine.
- It can take around 2 weeks for a person to be fully immune after a vaccination.
- Very few people who are fully vaccinated still get measles, but they are more likely to have a milder illness and are less likely to spread the disease to other people.
By getting vaccinated, you can help people at risk
Measles can cause serious complications in children and adults, especially in:
- anyone with a chronic illness or a weakened immune system
- children younger than five years who are not immunised
- babies younger than 12 months who are too young to receive the first dose of the MMR vaccine
- pregnant women.
When enough people in the community are vaccinated (about 95% of the population), the spread of a disease slows down or stops completely. This is called herd immunity and it most especially protects pregnant people and children younger than 12 months cannot get vaccinated. Read more about the MMR vaccine and reasons to vaccinate.

I am reaching out to you regarding a children’s eczema clinical trial we are running at two pharmacies in the Wellington region; Alexander Pharmacy (191 Willis Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011) and Castles Chemist (139 Riddiford Street, Newtown, Wellington 6021) as well as other community pharmacies around the country. This study is looking for volunteers aged 2-12 years with a doctor’s diagnosis of eczema to test a novel mānuka oil-based topical treatment.
As an overview of the study, volunteers and their parent/guardian travel to a participating pharmacy for two study visits, 6 weeks apart. They will be provided with study treatment to apply twice daily for 6 weeks and will answer a weekly questionnaire about their eczema symptoms. All study medication is provided free of charge and volunteers will be compensated for their time and travel expenses whilst in the study. We have further details about the study available here: https://www.mrinz.ac.nz/currently-recruiting/childrens-eczema

Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this and if you are interested or would like further information I am happy to answer any questions.
